Recommendations for treating impotence (aka: erectile dysfunction [ED]).
-
Do the dishes: Helping with housework makes men more sexier
-
Break a sweat: 20 minutes of exercise
-
Banish TV: More sex in bedrooms that don’t have a TV
-
Snuggle up: To release oxytocin, the love hormone
-
Feed your sweetie: The smell of sugary foods stimulates sexy feelings
Allow me to provide balance to these recommendations.
The prevalence of ED increases dramatically with advancing age: from about 8% in men between 40 and 49 years to 77.5% of men 75 years and older. Those with ED are afflicted with a vascular/enzyme-related condition. It has nothing to do with doing the dishes. The basic physiology is discussed.
Yes, snuggling is a way to show affection and should be encouraged between partners of all ages, but it doesn’t correct the underlying pathophysiology. Furthermore, exercise is associated with lowering the risk of ED, but not correcting the existing condition.
Yes, there are data supporting more intercourse in bedrooms without a TV, but this was in Italians, and I am not aware that these studies were conducted in men with ED.
I won’t bother to comment on the recommendation to do the dishes; but the idea that smelling (which will lead to eating) sugary foods is the most egregious recommendation. The fact is that obesity ? as well as hypertension, smoking, and diabetes mellitus ? are significantly associated with ED risk. It is really unhelpful to suggest a role for sugary foods when obesity is a predisposing factor to ED.

If you’re a sexually active man, the idea of losing your ability to have intercourse may be hard to imagine. But erectile dysfunction (ED) affects millions of men. What are the causes of this widespread condition? How do you know if you have erectile dysfunction — and whether the cause is biological or psychological? Join our panel of experts and patients for a candid discussion of this sensitive issue.
Erectile dysfunction or male impotence or in everyday language, when you have trouble “getting it up.” I think you know exactly what I’m talking about now. Fifteen million men in the United States suffer from erectile dysfunction. Of those, only 1 in 20 seek treatment. That makes this one of the most common untreated medical conditions in the world. We’re going to try to shed some light on it for you and everybody out there.
Is erectile dysfunction just a part of old age?
Erectile dysfunction doesn’t have to be a part of getting older. It’s true that as you get older, you may need more stimulation (such as stroking and touching) to get an erection. You might also need more time between erections. But older men should still be able to get an erection and enjoy sex.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
See the box to the right for some physical causes of erectile dysfunction. The following medical problems can also cause erectile dysfunction:
- Diabetes (high blood sugar)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
If you can’t keep your blood sugar or your blood pressure under control, you can get erectile dysfunction. It’s important that you take your medicines for these problems just the way your doctor tells you.
Sometimes your hormones get out of balance and this causes erectile dysfunction. Your doctor will decide if you need blood tests to check your hormones.
Some medicines can cause erectile dysfunction. If this is true for you, your doctor may take you off that medicine or give you a different one.
Drinking too much alcohol, smoking too much and abusing drugs can also cause erectile dysfunction.
Problems in your relationship with your sexual partner can also cause erectile dysfunction. Improving your relationship may help your sex life. If you decide to seek therapy, it will probably be most effective if your sex partner is included. Couples can learn new ways to please one another and to show affection. This can reduce anxiety about having erections.

Medicine is finally opening the bedroom door to women. When the male erectile dysfunction drug Viagra was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1998, many middle-aged men experienced a new lease on life, or at least on life in the bedroom.
The women who were their partners, however, were not included in this revolution, even though many were old enough to be starting their own sexual decline. Although many groups began calling for a “female Viagra,” they met skepticism. Long after the term “female sexual dysfunction” was coined in 1997, some doubted its existence; a 2006 article in PLoS-Medicine flagged the dysfunction as an example of disease mongering by pharmaceutical companies.
Now the new Female Sexual Medicine Program at Stanford Hospital & Clinics has put that attitude aside. “Five years ago, when I suggested we start this program, people said ‘Why? There are so many other important things in medicine,’” said Leah Millheiser, MD, an instructor in obstetrics and gynecology at the Stanford School of Medicine, and founder and director of the program. “My response was that if this is such a common problem, and it’s relatively easy to treat, why are we keeping it in the closet?”
Female sexual dysfunction affects 43 percent of women, yet it continues to be one of the most underdiagnosed medical problems in the United States. It is classified by four disorders: lack of sexual desire, the inability to become aroused, lack of orgasm (or sexual climax) and painful intercourse. “These problems are underdiagnosed, underreported and undertreated. They deserve a lot of attention,” said Jonathan Berek, MD, professor and chair of Stanford’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Millheiser said she started the Female Sexual Medicine Program after recognizing there were no other programs or fellowships available to medical students in the Bay Area on how to manage women’s sexual dysfunction. This multidisciplinary program integrates gynecology, urology, primary care, mental health, pelvic-floor physical therapy and sex therapy. It also includes clinical research-to understand how sexual well-being is affected after a woman is diagnosed with cancer or undergoes chemotherapy. “We have an opportunity at Stanford to develop a program in an area that is frequently overlooked by practitioners in California and throughout the country,” said Berek. “We can and will be a leader in this very important area.”
Millheiser said there is often a strong disconnect between how a woman feels about sexual function and what she tells her physician in a typical 15-minute, once-yearly gynecological visit. The purpose of the program is to provide women with the education and therapy they need to take back control of their sexuality and sexual function. “There is a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy about sexual dysfunction in managed care, as many physicians simply do not receive the training for discussing sexual dysfunction,” said Millheiser. “If a patient doesn’t feel her doctor is open to the topic of sexual dysfunction, she may not relay that information. A sexual complaint can be a marker of serious underlying disease, which is why it’s so important for a patient to tell her doctor so it can be further explored.”
According to the National Institutes of Health, sexual dysfunction in women can result from a variety of medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, nerve disorders or hormone problems. Medication, work-related stress and anxiety may also affect desire and function. Cultural or religious beliefs may also impact sexual behavior, Millheiser said. For example, being told sex is bad or evil may imprint messages in a woman’s mind that won’t allow her to experience sexual pleasure, even while in healthy relationships. “The brain simply won’t allow you to relax,” she said. “We want to remove these barriers and have these women view sex as a normal part of a healthy relationship.” Millheiser said the program, which is housed in the gynecology practice at the Blake Wilbur Building, has drawn patients of all ages who are seeking basic answers about sexuality. In addition to her work at Stanford, she also lectures around the nation and is a regular contributor on radio and television programs such as “The View from the Bay” on ABC-7 News. “Women are becoming more empowered about sexual dysfunction,” said Millheiser. “They are seeing sex as a quality-of-life issue, not just a health issue.”

Physicians have been struggling with erectile dysfunction for years. Egyptians blamed it on evil spells, ancient Greeks blamed ED on horseback riding, Contemporary physicians have been known to blame bicycle riding, or childhood trauma, not to mention stress, (confused sexual orientation). Over the years we have developed an imaginative array of treatments that includes nuts (almonds, pistachios) and fruits (dates, currant juice) bird eggs in Persia, seeds (a mix of sesame) lentils, rice and sugar cane juice . Ancient Indians treated ED with goat testicles boiled in milk or rubbed boiled alligator testes on the feet. The Egyptians were more direct, smearing remedies (such as crocodile hearts and wood oil) directly on the penis. Islamic physicians blamed ED it on an imbalance in the four fluids, or humors, thought to course through the body. Men were advised to avoid sex after meals, in the bathroom, and with old or unappealing partners. Like the Egyptians, medieval men believed erectile dysfunction was caused by evil spells cast by witches, but didn’t hesitate to blame their wives either. Impotence was grounds for divorce. In the Victorian era, many thought erectile dysfunction was due to a depletion of sperm. Doctors cautioned against masturbation (a “waste” of sperm) and prescribed quinine, opium, digitalis and bleeding, to no avail. In the late 1800s, French professor of medicine Charles Edouard Brown-Séquard proposed that injections of animal sperm might restore vitality. He tested the theory by injecting himself with an extract of dog and guinea pig testicles. His colleagues, who agreed the professor looked good for a man of 72, agreed to test the extracts on their patients. Soon the treatment, organotherapy, was all the rage.
Starting in the late 1910s, a few doctors went a step further, deciding to transplant whole testicles. In France, Serge Voronoff transplanted monkey testicles into the nether regions of more than 1,000 old men. In Kansas, John Brinkley ran a hospital that specialized in grafting goat testicles onto patients. At a California prison, Leo Stanley gave older inmates testicles of younger, executed prisoners. Although many men claimed to feel rejuvenated by their testicular shots and transplants, few recovered their virility, and researchers continued their search. In the 1930s doctors experimented with surgical adjustment of penile muscles. In the 1940s and 1950s, they tried implants, inspired by the penile bones many animals have. In the 1960s, an effective option finally arrived. A Georgia tire serviceman began work on a vacuum pump to treat his own impotence, which was ultimately approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1982.
The problem being that the pump merely draws lymph fluid into the penis, rendering it rather like a big (bigger anyway) floppy fish without a spine. Not exactly the infrastructure needed for satisfactory penetration.
The pump appeared just as several researchers began to identify drug treatments for impotence, albeit few with the showmanship exhibited by British doctor Giles Brindley. At a 1983 urology meeting, Brindley injected himself with a drug, phentolamine — then took the stage, dropped his pants and shared his erection with his colleagues. Brindley injected 33 drugs in his penis before finding one that worked, which may have rendered him slightly envious of the discoverers of Viagra. British researchers Ian Osterloh and Gill Samuels were developing a drug to improve blood flow to the heart when they realized that the drug, sildenafil citrate, was much more effective at improving blood flow to the penis, causing erections capable of getting the job done.
This is not to sat that the world isn’t still full of strange, silly, and potential ED treatments. Seal penis, Empire ants from China, testosterone, . . . the list goes on.

Health Canada is warning consumers not to use ADAM, an unauthorized product for erectile dysfunction, because it can pose serious health risks, especially for those with heart problems or those at risk of stroke. ADAM contains an undeclared ingredient similar to the prescription drug sildenafil, which should only be used under the supervision of a health-care professional, Health Canada said Monday. Patients with heart disease who take sildenafil are at risk of sudden cardiac death, heart attack, stroke, low blood pressure, chest pain and abnormal heartbeat.
Sildenafil may also be associated with other side effects, including vision loss, seizure, sudden decrease or loss of hearing, dizziness, prolonged erection, headache, flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion and abdominal pain. Health Canada, which does not authorize the sale of ADAM in this country, said sildenafil should not be used by anyone taking any type of nitrate drug (nitroglycerine) due to the risk of developing potentially life threatening low blood pressure. The distributor, Natural Health Solutions, has voluntarily recalled ADAM, which was available at retail outlets across Canada and over the internet. Consumers should return the product to the place of purchase. Canadians who have used ADAM and are concerned about their health should consult a health-care professional. There has been one report of an adverse reaction associated with the use of the product.

An Australian medical study has shown that obese men in Australia have more erection problems with their penises than normal weight men. The researcher thinks that weight loss may help alleviate male erectile dysfunction, along with reducing the risk of heart problems.
Gary Wittert, the head of the medical school at the University of Adelaide, in South Australia, performed the study in response to the growing trend of obesity in men in Australia, along with the increased risk of seroius chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease.
Wittert and other scientists already knew that blood vessels to the heart are adversely affected by obesity. When problems like this occur, cardiovascular problems begin to occur, such as heart attacks and strokes.
However, less information is known about blood vessels in the penis, and how they are affected by obesity. Blood vessels in the penis allow the penis to enlarge before and during sexual intercourse. The Wittert study was part of the Florey Adelaide Male Ageing Study. In the study, about one thousand men were examined in order to identify major factors that determine their psychological, physical, and reproductive health.
Wittert concluded in his study that when blood vessels are adversely affected in the penis due to obesity, men can often get erectile dysfunction and poor urinary tract function. Erectile dysfunction (ED), sometimes also called male impotence, is a sexual dysfunction (failure to perform normally) that is characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis. Medical studies have shown that an overwhelming percentage of erectile dysfunction cases (around 90%) are physical in nature, not psychological.
Just how bad is the trend toward obesity in Australia and the United States? And how it relates to erectile problems? Please read on.

Natural erectile dysfunction treatments are a popular alternative to the big three (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) ED prescriptions. For good reason; they are generally more affordable, easily available, and totally anonymous. Beware! A significant number of these “Natural” products have been adulterated with undeclared synthetic pharmaceutical agents identical to those found in the aforementioned. Some studies have even detected sildenafil (Viagra), sildenafil analogs, tadalafil (Cialis), and tadalafil analogs together in the same supplement!
Obviously, these “Natural” treatments pose an increased risk for interactions. Because natural treatments are not heavily regulated, few trials have been performed. That would include toxicologic profiles. Adequate quality-control mechanisms have also found batch to batch inconsistencies of active ingredients .
Obviously, undocumented synthetic prescription adulterants can easily have unknown effects on the individuals who consume them. One study found detectable levels of sildenafil, famotidine, ibuprofen, promethazine, diazepam, nifedipine, captopril, amoxicillin, and dextromethorphan in 200 different herbal supplements advertised as being “all natural”. For this reason we had Confidence Rx tested by one of the finest and most credible independent labs in the United States.

They’re touted as the natural remedy for erectile dysfunction (ED), but what you may be popping to perform in bed may cause reactions you weren’t expecting. A recent investigation by the Associated Press revealed that many “Natural” male enhancement pills may actually contain one of the prescription-only equivalents such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra. Pfizer, maker of Viagra, conducted its own study of over 3,000 herbal enhancement supplements and found that nearly 70 per cent of them contained the main ingredient found in their Viagra. The danger of such ingredients doesn’t lie in the established and approved lab-tested brands, but in unregulated knock-offs sold over the Internet.
We at HBC Protocols have had our formulation tested by an independent lab, not only for all prescription substances but their analogs as well. Here are the lab results.
It’s not about control;

Additional side effects and cautions that can occur with high doses of certain sex herbs, combinations of sex herbs, or combination of sex herbs with medicines:
Do not use high dosages of sex enhancing herbs if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease (including irregular rhythm), kidney, thyroid or liver disease, seizure disorder, significant hormonal problems, or stroke. Do not take sexual enhancers the same day with antidepressant medications or MAO inhibitors, decongestants, diet aids, hormones such as DHEA, testosterone or pregnenolone, or supplements that have a stimulating effects such as tyrosine, SAM-e, phenylalanine, etc. Consult with your doctor before use if you have any health problems or are taking any medications. Discontinue use and consult your doctor if you experience high blood pressure, heart palpitations or rapid heart beat, dizziness, headache, rash, tremors, depression or hallucinations. Other side effects possible with high doses of certain sex enhancing herbs may include nervousness, anxiety, mood changes, insomnia, nausea, or skin flushing.
